Space and the outdoors with a Pug Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a charming, mischievous, loving dog the fit is usually good either way.

Grooming and coat care in Ongpangkong (N)

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Ongpangkong (N) being high-rainfall tropical, near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Ensure good airflow indoors to keep the coat and bedding from staying damp.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Health and vet care in Ongpangkong (N)

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the extended rainy season rather than during it. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 29°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Pug that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A Pug has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Pug puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
