Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In lush, wet tropical conditions water matters as much as food — near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Golden Retriever

Homes around Satoi usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Satoi

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. Near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Golden Retriever than intensity ever will. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the North-East tend to find this dog a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

The city sits at about 1,886 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 24°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Golden Retriever that it is on the plains.

Winter nights drop to about 1°C in January. A Golden Retriever copes well with cold, but a puppy still needs a warm, draught-free bed for its first winter.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
