Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In monsoon-heavy conditions water matters as much as food — the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Exercise and routine through the extended rainy season in Sekruzu

The extended rainy season is the stretch that needs planning. The green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Sekruzu?

Sekruzu is monsoon-heavy — the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, bold, lively, friendly breed. The city sits at about 1,711 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 25°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Shih Tzu that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 2°C in January. A Shih Tzu feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
