Is the Shih Tzu right for Sotokur?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Sotokur on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Sotokur

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, affectionate, gentle dog the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

The city sits at about 1,862 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 24°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Shih Tzu that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 2°C in January. A Shih Tzu feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
