Living with a Shih Tzu in Banki

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Banki

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. Moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Banki?

The Shih Tzu does well in Banki, with one caveat worth knowing up front: moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips. For a bold, lively, friendly, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Banki is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
