Grooming and coat care in Kanjipani

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, a Saint Bernard Puppy's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a larger coat, matting and trapped moisture are what to catch early. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Living with a Saint Bernard Puppy in Kanjipani

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a giant-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and a giant-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Saint Bernard Puppy adapts well to Kanjipani on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Consistency does more for a Saint Bernard Puppy than intensity ever will. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Summer here peaks in April at about 38°C. That is manageable for a Saint Bernard, but watch it closely because its double coat holds heat close to the body and a giant body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Saint Bernard puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
