Living with a Shih Tzu in Kisinda

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. Owners in the east tend to find this dog a bold, lively, friendly companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Kisinda?

The Shih Tzu does well in Kisinda, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important. For a bold, lively, friendly, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Grooming and coat care in Kisinda

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kisinda

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Kisinda, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Kisinda is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
