Is the Shih Tzu right for Konark?

Konark is coastal tropical — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, loyal, affectionate breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate dog the fit is usually good either way.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Konark

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. Moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Grooming and coat care in Konark

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Summer in Konark peaks in April at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters in Konark stay warm, with even January nights around 18°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Konark are November to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
