Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kosagumuda

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Kosagumuda, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Kosagumuda

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. Owners in the east tend to find this dog a playful, affectionate, gentle companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Kosagumuda usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Kosagumuda is hottest in May, averaging 39°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 11°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Kosagumuda are February, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
