Is the Shih Tzu right for Kotiya?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Kotiya on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Kotiya usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kotiya

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Kotiya, moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Kotiya

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a small-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the east tend to find this dog a bold, lively, friendly companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Summer in Kotiya peaks in April at about 38°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters in Kotiya are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Kotiya are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
