Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Rugudi usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Grooming and coat care in Rugudi

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Rugudi being warm and humid, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Rugudi

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Rugudi is hottest in April, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 12°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Rugudi are February, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
