Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Tikiri

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Tikiri, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Tikiri?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Tikiri on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Grooming and coat care in Tikiri

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, a Shih Tzu's coat and skin want checking more often through the long monsoon. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Summer here peaks in April at about 36°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
