Grooming and coat care in Desuri

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Desuri being warm and arid, the dry heat means hydration and shade matter more than almost anything else, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep unlimited fresh water available and add a cooling mat or shaded resting spot.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Desuri

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. Owners across North India tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Exercise and routine through the dry summer months in Desuri

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Desuri, the dry heat means hydration and shade matter more than almost anything else, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Keep unlimited fresh water available and add a cooling mat or shaded resting spot.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and arid conditions water matters as much as food — the dry heat means hydration and shade matter more than almost anything else, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Desuri is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 8°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
