Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Gangtok

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Gangtok, crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Living with a Jack Russell Terrier Puppy in Gangtok

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Jack Russell Terrier Puppy. Owners in the region's hills tend to find this dog a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Health and vet care in Gangtok

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the cold winter season rather than during it. Keep up daily exercise — the cool weather is ideal for longer, more active walks.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because crisp hill weather is comfortable for most dogs but harsh for short-coated ones in winter, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

The city sits at about 1,654 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 28°C in June, so heat is rarely the problem for a Jack Russell Terrier that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Jack Russell Terrier feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Jack Russell Terrier puppy, the easiest months to arrive are May and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
