Is the Afghan Hound Puppy right for Velachery?

Velachery is warm and humid — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important — and the Afghan Hound Puppy is a large-sized, aloof, dignified, independent breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size needs its hard exercise moved to the cooler hours. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Health and vet care in Velachery

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the long monsoon rather than during it. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Summer here peaks in May at about 36°C. That is manageable for a Afghan Hound, but watch it closely because a large body sheds heat slowly: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 20°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from October to November, and November is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are January, February, March, June and July: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
