Living with a Shih Tzu in Cherial

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Health and vet care in Cherial

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the brief pre-monsoon heat rather than during it. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Cherial?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Cherial on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Cherial is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Cherial are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Cherial are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
