The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Chinthapally?

The Shih Tzu does well in Chinthapally, with one caveat worth knowing up front: the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds. For a bold, lively, friendly, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Chinthapally is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Chinthapally are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of Chinthapally's rain falls in August. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Chinthapally are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
