Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Eligaid

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Eligaid, the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Health and vet care in Eligaid

Preventive care in Eligaid is largely a matter of anticipating the brief pre-monsoon heat. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Eligaid

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. Owners across South India tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Eligaid is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
