Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Living with a Afghan Hound Puppy in Hyderabad

Most homes here are apartments and gated flats, so a large-sized breed that adapts to indoor living is a practical choice. In a city, the routine has to be deliberate — fixed walk times, a defined resting spot.

Space is the binding constraint in a city, and a settled temperament matters more in a shared building than anywhere else. For a aloof, dignified, independent dog the fit is usually good either way.

Health and vet care in Hyderabad

Preventive care in Hyderabad is largely a matter of anticipating the brief pre-monsoon heat. Parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the single best habit there is. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Hyderabad is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Hyderabad are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Hyderabad are January, February, June, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
