Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Khammam usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In pleasant semi-tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Khammam

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. Owners throughout peninsular India tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Khammam

The brief pre-monsoon heat is the stretch that needs planning. The balanced weather is one of the easier indian climates for pet ownership, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Khammam is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Khammam stay warm, with even December nights around 16°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Khammam are November to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
