Is the Shih Tzu right for Khazipet?

Khazipet is pleasant semi-tropical — comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, loyal, affectionate breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Khazipet

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Khazipet, comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because comfortable temperatures for most of the year make routine care straightforward, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate dog the fit is usually good either way.

Summer here peaks in May at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 20°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from June to October, and September is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are November to March: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
