Living with a Shih Tzu in Parkal

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Parkal?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Parkal on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In pleasant semi-tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Parkal

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Parkal being pleasant semi-tropical, the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Parkal is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters in Parkal stay warm, with even December nights around 15°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Parkal are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
