The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, keep water available and watch intake through the brief pre-monsoon heat.

Space and the outdoors with a Pug Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a charming, mischievous, loving dog the fit is usually good either way.

Shankarampet (R) is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Pug needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Pug puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
