Living with a Golden Retriever in Tamsi

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Golden Retriever room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Tamsi

The brief pre-monsoon heat is the stretch that needs planning. The plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Golden Retriever than intensity ever will. Keep vaccinations, deworming and annual vet checks on schedule year-round.

Space and the outdoors with a Golden Retriever

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids dog the fit is usually good either way.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In pleasant semi-tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Tamsi is hottest in May, averaging 44°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Golden Retriever needs real protection from that because its double coat holds heat close to the body and a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Golden Retriever puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
