Is the Shih Tzu right for Vangoor?

Vangoor is moderate Deccan — the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, bold, lively, friendly breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Take advantage of the mild weather with consistent daily walks and play.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In moderate Deccan conditions water matters as much as food — the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Health and vet care in Vangoor

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the plateau climate is relatively moderate, which suits a wide range of breeds, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the brief pre-monsoon heat rather than during it. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a bold, lively, friendly dog the fit is usually good either way.

Vangoor is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 15°C, so cold is not a concern.

Most of the year's rain falls in September. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
