Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a aloof, dignified, independent dog the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Grooming and coat care in Velgatur

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Velgatur being moderate Deccan, the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Maintain a regular grooming routine suited to the breed's coat.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In moderate Deccan conditions water matters as much as food — the balanced weather is one of the easier Indian climates for pet ownership, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Exercise and routine through the brief pre-monsoon heat in Velgatur

The brief pre-monsoon heat is the stretch that needs planning. The balanced weather is one of the easier indian climates for pet ownership, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Provide shade and water during the short hot spell before the monsoon.

Velgatur is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from March to May. A Afghan Hound needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are mild, with December nights around 14°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are October to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
