Is the Shih Tzu right for Haldwani?

Haldwani is cold mountain — the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others — and the Shih Tzu is a small-sized, playful, affectionate, gentle breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Older pets may need joint support as cold can stiffen movement.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Haldwani

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, affectionate, gentle dog the fit is usually good either way.

Exercise and routine through the cold winter season in Haldwani

The cold winter season is the stretch that needs planning. The cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Check paws for cracking and ice between toes during the coldest months.

Haldwani is hottest in May, averaging 40°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from May to June. A Shih Tzu needs real protection from that because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
