Space and the outdoors with a Afghan Hound Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a aloof, dignified, independent dog the fit is usually good either way.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Darjeeling Pulbazar

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Afghan Hound Puppy than intensity ever will. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Living with a Afghan Hound Puppy in Darjeeling Pulbazar

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Afghan Hound Puppy room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 27°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Afghan Hound that it is on the plains.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Afghan Hound puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, April, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
