Space and the outdoors with a Dogo Argentino Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids dog the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Dogo Argentino Puppy right for Kalimpong?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Dogo Argentino Puppy adapts well to Kalimpong on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In warm and humid conditions water matters as much as food — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Grooming and coat care in Kalimpong

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Kalimpong being warm and humid, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

The city sits at about 1,566 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 25°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Dogo Argentino that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Dogo Argentino feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Dogo Argentino puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
