Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In humid coastal conditions water matters as much as food — the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Apartment living with a Pointer Puppy

Flats are the norm in Kolkata, so indoor enrichment carries real weight — puzzle feeders, chew toys, and a resting spot away from through-traffic. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kolkata

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. The air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so split the activity across two cooler outings rather than one long session. Consistency does more for a Pointer Puppy than intensity ever will. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Is the Pointer Puppy right for Kolkata?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Pointer Puppy adapts well to Kolkata on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Kolkata is hottest in April, averaging 38°C in the afternoon. A Pointer needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C. A Pointer has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry inside the ears after baths and rain, since droopy ears trap moisture.

For a new Pointer puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
