The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Pedong

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Pedong, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Grooming and coat care in Pedong

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Pedong being coastal tropical, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Is the Pug Puppy right for Pedong?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Pug Puppy adapts well to Pedong on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The city sits at about 1,407 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 26°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Pug that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 5°C in January. A Pug feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from May to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Pug puppy, the easiest months to arrive are April and October: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
