Space and the outdoors with a Dusky Lorikeet

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Grooming and coat care in Tawang Hq

Let the weather set the schedule, not the calendar. With the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, a Dusky Lorikeet's coat and skin want checking more often through the cold winter season. On a smaller coat, irritation shows up well before matting does. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, keep water available and watch intake through the cold winter season.

Health and vet care in Tawang Hq

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the cooler climate suits thick-coated breeds but needs winter planning for others, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the cold winter season rather than during it. Provide a warm, draught-free sleeping spot and a coat for short-haired breeds in winter.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 18°C in August, so heat is rarely the problem for a Dusky Lorikeet that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -5°C in January. A Dusky Lorikeet feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from June to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

No month here is easy on every count for a Dusky Lorikeet, so plan the first two weeks around a cool, dry room rather than the calendar.
