Is the Blue Monk right for New Delhi?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Blue Monk adapts well to New Delhi on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Watch for seasonal coat shedding as temperatures change and brush accordingly.

Feeding a small bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, keep water available and watch intake through the peak summer and winter swings.

New Delhi is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Blue Monk needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C. A light sweater helps a small Blue Monk on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Blue Monk bird, the easiest months to arrive are March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
