Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here winters get genuinely cold, so warmth and joint care take priority, and a small-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Red Lorikeet adapts well to Shimla (Urban) on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Older pets may need joint support as cold can stiffen movement.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 29°C in May, so heat is rarely the problem for a Red Lorikeet that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about -3°C in January. A Red Lorikeet feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Red Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive are May: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
