Living with a Scarlet Macaw in Mawthadraishan

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. Owners in the North-East tend to find this bird a family friendly, good with kids companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Feeding a large bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Health and vet care in Mawthadraishan

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given near-constant moisture means skin, paw and bedding hygiene need real attention, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the extended rainy season rather than during it. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

Space and the outdoors with a Scarlet Macaw

Homes around Mawthadraishan usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A breed this size needs that outdoor time to be dependable, not occasional.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

The city sits at about 1,612 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 22°C in August, so heat is rarely the problem for a Scarlet Macaw that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 2°C in January. A Scarlet Macaw feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

No month here is easy on every count for a Scarlet Macaw, so plan the first two weeks around a cool, dry room rather than the calendar.
