Is the Blue & Gold Macaw right for Nongstoin?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, and a large-sized bird feels that more than an owner expects. The Blue & Gold Macaw adapts well to Nongstoin on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Towel-dry after every walk in the rains and check between the toes for irritation.

Feeding a large bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, keep water available and watch intake through the extended rainy season.

Space and the outdoors with a Blue & Gold Macaw

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

The city sits at about 1,321 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 24°C in August, so heat is rarely the problem for a Blue & Gold Macaw that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 4°C in January. A Blue & Gold Macaw feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

No month here is easy on every count for a Blue & Gold Macaw, so plan the first two weeks around a cool, dry room rather than the calendar.
