The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

The city sits at about 1,576 m above sea level, so it runs cooler than the plains around it.

Summers here are mild, peaking at about 23°C in August, so heat is rarely the problem for a Gallah Cockatoo that it is on the plains.

Winter nights fall to about 2°C in January. A Gallah Cockatoo feels that: bedding raised off the floor, a sweater or warm cover at night, and a room kept out of the draught.

The rainy season runs from April to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

No month here is easy on every count for a Gallah Cockatoo, so plan the first two weeks around a cool, dry room rather than the calendar.
