Living with a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo in Kanpur

With apartment living common across the city, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo owners do well with structured indoor routines and regular outdoor walks. In a city, the routine has to be deliberate — fixed walk times, a defined resting spot.

Feeding a large bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most birds eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Grooming and coat care in Kanpur

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Kanpur being coastal tropical, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kanpur

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Kanpur, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Kanpur is hottest in April, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Sulphur Crested Cockatoo needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are mild, with January nights around 13°C, so cold is not a concern.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Sulphur Crested Cockatoo bird, the easiest months to arrive are November to February: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
