Space and the outdoors with a Blue & Gold Macaw

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a family friendly, good with kids bird the fit is usually good either way.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Blue & Gold Macaw. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Feeding a large bird here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Grooming and coat care in Tenkasi

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Tenkasi being warm and humid, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.
