Space and the outdoors with a Red Lorikeet

Homes around Shikohabad usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Is the Red Lorikeet right for Shikohabad?

Shikohabad is continental plains — the climate swings from hot summers to cool winters, so care changes with the season — and the Red Lorikeet is a small-sized, family friendly, good with kids breed. Those two facts decide most of what daily life looks like here. A breed this size copes well, provided shade and water are always within reach. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

Feeding a small bird here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In continental plains conditions water matters as much as food — the climate swings from hot summers to cool winters, so care changes with the season, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the bird approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Shikohabad is hottest in May, averaging 44°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Red Lorikeet needs real protection from that: a cage well away from windows and direct sun, a shallow bath dish, and a room that stays under about 32°C.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 7°C. A light sweater helps a small Red Lorikeet on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Keep the cage out of damp corners and change the paper daily.

For a new Red Lorikeet bird, the easiest months to arrive in Shikohabad are March, September, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
