Is a Shih Tzu a good fit for Chennai?

A Shih Tzu does well in Chennai if the routine suits the place. Space is the limit in a metro, and time outdoors has to be deliberate — which is to say a small breed settles into flat living without much fuss. The other half is the weather: moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Exercise and daily routine in Chennai

Consistency beats intensity. Fix the walk times around the cooler ends of the day and stick to them, particularly through the long monsoon, when moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips. For a breed this size, keep the sessions short and frequent.

Vet care and seasonal health in Chennai

Preventive care in Chennai is mostly a matter of anticipating the long monsoon. Because moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, parasite control and skin checks earn their keep here more than they would elsewhere. The vaccination record travels with the puppy; staying on schedule is the highest-value habit there is. Stay current on tick and flea prevention, which thrive in warm, damp conditions.

Grooming a Shih Tzu through the long monsoon in Chennai

The aim here is dry, clean skin — appearance is secondary. Chennai's warm and humid conditions mean moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so a Shih Tzu kept here needs its grooming rhythm matched to the season rather than fixed year-round. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Health, vaccination and the guarantee

Health checks, vaccination and deworming are completed before the pet travels, records come with it, and a 7-day health guarantee applies from delivery. After that, routine vet visits and seasonal care keep problems small — relevant in Chennai, where moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips.

Common mistakes to avoid

Most problems trace back to three things: picking a breed for looks, not matching energy levels to the household, and switching food abruptly. Locally, add a fourth — planning the routine without regard for the long monsoon. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Costs beyond the purchase

Think in terms of years rather than the purchase. Vaccinations, food, grooming and vet care continue for the life of the pet. In a metro like Chennai, both vets and supplies are readily available.

Feeding and daily routine

Feed at fixed times rather than leaving food out, and keep whatever diet the pet arrived on for the first fortnight before changing anything. In Chennai's warm and humid conditions, water matters as much as food — check the bowl more than once a day. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Which kind of pet suits Chennai

Start with the species, not the breed. Chennai's warm and humid climate means moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, which shapes how practical a dog's exercise routine is here. Cats and small birds are less weather-dependent and often the easier first pet. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

The first week

Settling in takes a few days. Reduced appetite and extra sleeping are normal. Keep the diet unchanged at first, keep introductions calm and gradual, and follow the vaccination schedule supplied with the pet. We remain available through the settling-in period.
