The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In high-rainfall tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Guwahati

City flats and high-rises are the norm, which suits a well-exercised, indoor-friendly Shih Tzu. Owners across the North-Eastern states tend to find this dog a bold, lively, friendly companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Apartment living with a Shih Tzu

Flats are the norm in Guwahati, so indoor enrichment carries real weight — puzzle feeders, chew toys, and a resting spot away from through-traffic. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Grooming and coat care in Guwahati

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Guwahati being high-rainfall tropical, the green, rainy climate is mild but demands dry shelter and grooming discipline, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep a dry, raised resting area — prolonged damp leads to skin and paw problems.

Summer here peaks in June at about 34°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 10°C. A light sweater helps a small Shih Tzu on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from April to September, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
