The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Living with a Kanni Puppy in Pothia

With independent houses common, there is usually room for a large-sized breed to exercise at home. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Grooming and coat care in Pothia

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Pothia being hot-summer / cool-winter, extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In hot-summer / cool-winter conditions water matters as much as food — extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Space and the outdoors with a Kanni Puppy

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a loyal, shy, alert dog the fit is usually good either way.

Pothia is hottest in May, averaging 39°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
