The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Feeding a large dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a large build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In subtropical plains conditions water matters as much as food — the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Is the Kanni Puppy right for Saraswati Vihar?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the wide seasonal range means both cooling in summer and warmth in winter matter, and a large-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Kanni Puppy adapts well to Saraswati Vihar on a sensible routine — shorter outings, timed away from the midday heat. Shift walks to early morning and late evening through the peak summer weeks.

Saraswati Vihar is hottest in May, averaging 43°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to June. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 6°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to August, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are March, September, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
