Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because daytime temperatures climb high for much of the year, which shapes daily routines, keep water available and watch intake through the dry summer months.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Kanni Puppy room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Dhanpur is hottest in May, averaging 42°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 12°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from July to September, and July is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, October, November and December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
