Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, affectionate, gentle dog the fit is usually good either way.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Kodungallur

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kodungallur

The long monsoon is the stretch that needs planning. Moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, so keep sessions short and frequent. Consistency does more for a Shih Tzu than intensity ever will. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In humid coastal conditions water matters as much as food — moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Summer in Kodungallur peaks in March at about 33°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters in Kodungallur stay warm, with even January nights around 23°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from May to November, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Kodungallur are December to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
