Exercise and routine through the long monsoon in Kuttanad

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Kuttanad, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, which makes timing the variable that matters. Several brief outings suit this size better than one long one. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a small dog here

Feed age-appropriate food matched to a small build, and change brands gradually rather than overnight. In coastal tropical conditions water matters as much as food — the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, and appetite often dips before anything else shows.

Living with a Shih Tzu in Kuttanad

Larger plots and open surroundings make this a comfortable setting for an active Shih Tzu. Owners across South India tend to find this dog a playful, loyal, affectionate companion, and the settling-in is usually easier than the first week suggests.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Homes around Kuttanad usually come with their own ground, which takes the pressure off a formal exercise plan. A small-sized breed manages this well when the outdoor time is genuinely regular.

Grooming and coat care in Kuttanad

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Kuttanad being coastal tropical, the sea-influenced humidity makes ventilation and dry bedding important, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Keep bedding dry and the resting area well-ventilated, especially during the monsoon.

Summer in Kuttanad peaks in March at about 35°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters in Kuttanad stay warm, with even January nights around 22°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from May to October, and June is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive in Kuttanad are December: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
