Living with a Shih Tzu in Punalur

Homes here often have more space and independent plots, which gives a Shih Tzu room to move and settle in comfortably. With more room to work with, the routine can stay informal, though it should still be regular.

The first week

Expect a quiet few days. Most puppies eat less and sleep more while they settle. Keep the food the same as before the move, introduce the household gradually rather than all at once, and hold off on visitors for a bit.

Space and the outdoors with a Shih Tzu

Space is rarely the constraint here; the routine is what needs attention. For a playful, loyal, affectionate dog the fit is usually good either way.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Punalur?

The Shih Tzu does well in Punalur, with one caveat worth knowing up front: moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips. For a playful, loyal, affectionate, small-sized breed that mostly changes when things happen rather than what happens. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because moisture in the air can encourage skin and ear issues if grooming slips, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

Summer here peaks in March at about 35°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 21°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from May to November, and October is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are December to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
