Health and vet care in Thiruvananthapuram

Local climate decides which problems actually turn up. Given the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, the recurring ones here are skin and coat trouble, parasites and hydration — not the whole textbook. Keep vaccination and deworming on schedule, and book the check before the long monsoon rather than during it. Brush regularly — humidity makes mats and tangles form faster in longer coats.

Feeding a small dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a small frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, keep water available and watch intake through the long monsoon.

The first week

The first week is about routine, not excitement. Feed at consistent times, let the puppy approach people in its own time rather than being passed around, and keep the diet unchanged at first.

Is the Shih Tzu right for Thiruvananthapuram?

Start with the weather, not the breed standard. Here the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, and a small-sized dog feels that more than an owner expects. The Shih Tzu adapts well to Thiruvananthapuram on a sensible routine — steady hydration and shade rather than reduced activity. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Grooming and coat care in Thiruvananthapuram

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Thiruvananthapuram being warm and humid, the air stays humid through much of the year, so coat and skin care need attention, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Dry the coat and ears thoroughly after baths or rain to prevent fungal and skin issues.

Summer here peaks in March at about 33°C. That is manageable for a Shih Tzu, but watch it closely because its short muzzle makes panting less effective at shedding heat and its double coat holds heat close to the body: keep activity to the cooler ends of the day and a shaded, ventilated spot indoors.

Winters stay warm, with even January nights around 23°C, so there is no cold season to plan for.

The rainy season runs from May to November, and October is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk; dry the coat right down to the skin after it gets wet, or it can develop skin infections.

For a new Shih Tzu puppy, the easiest months to arrive are December to January: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
