Feeding a large dog here

Diet is simpler than most guides make it. Good food suited to a large frame, fixed mealtimes, and any change phased in over a week. Because extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, keep water available and watch intake through the peak summer and winter swings.

Exercise and routine through the peak summer and winter swings in Jaithari

Build the day around local conditions rather than a figure from a breed chart. In Jaithari, extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, which makes timing the variable that matters. Two shorter outings work better here for a breed this size. Provide shade and constant water in summer; a warm bed and blanket in winter.

The aim is dry, clean skin — appearance comes second. Jaithari being subtropical plains, extreme summer heat and a brisk winter both need planning across the year, so a regular brush prevents most of what would otherwise become a vet visit. Shift walks to early morning and late evening through the peak summer weeks.

Jaithari is hottest in May, averaging 41°C in the afternoon, and stays above 38°C from April to May. A Kanni needs real protection from that because a large body sheds heat slowly: walks before 8 am and after 7 pm, a cool tiled floor or a cooler in the afternoons, fresh water in more than one place, and never a parked car.

Winters are cool rather than cold, with January nights around 9°C. A Kanni has a short, thin coat, so a light sweater helps on the coldest nights.

The rainy season runs from June to September, and August is usually the wettest month. Check for ticks after every walk.

For a new Kanni puppy, the easiest months to arrive are February, March, October and November: not too hot, not too wet, and warm enough at night.
